Background of the Study
Inter-ethnic marriage has become increasingly common in multicultural societies, reshaping cultural identity dynamics. In Aba North Local Government, Abia State, such unions offer both opportunities and challenges for preserving distinct cultural identities. Inter-ethnic marriages facilitate cultural exchange and social integration but may also lead to the dilution of traditional practices and values (Okoye, 2023). They create hybrid identities that reflect the merging of diverse cultural heritages. Recent studies suggest that while inter-ethnic marriage can foster mutual respect and understanding, it also raises questions about the retention of ethnic traditions and cultural continuity (Nwabuisi, 2024). As communities navigate these complexities, understanding the impact of inter-ethnic unions on cultural identity is critical to formulating strategies that respect diversity while preserving heritage (Chukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
There is uncertainty regarding the effects of inter-ethnic marriage on cultural identity in Aba North. While these marriages can promote integration, they may also result in the loss of unique cultural practices and traditions. The challenge is to understand how couples and communities negotiate cultural differences and maintain distinct ethnic identities. This research gap necessitates a detailed examination of the dynamics involved in inter-ethnic unions and their long-term impact on cultural identity (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of inter-ethnic marriage on cultural identity.
  • To explore how couples negotiate cultural differences.
  • To recommend strategies for preserving ethnic traditions within inter-ethnic unions.

Research Questions:

  • How do inter-ethnic marriages affect cultural identity in Aba North?
  • What strategies do couples use to balance different cultural traditions?
  • What are the long-term impacts of inter-ethnic marriage on ethnic identity retention?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Inter-ethnic marriage significantly alters cultural identity among participants.
  • H₂: Couples who actively integrate both cultures exhibit stronger hybrid cultural identities.
  • H₃: There is a significant relationship between cultural negotiation strategies and ethnic identity preservation.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the complex interplay between inter-ethnic marriage and cultural identity. Its findings will be valuable for cultural policymakers and community leaders seeking to promote harmonious coexistence while preserving ethnic heritage (Ndukwe, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the effects of inter-ethnic marriage on cultural identity in Aba North Local Government, Abia State, excluding other forms of marital unions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Inter-ethnic Marriage: A marital union between individuals from different ethnic backgrounds.
  • Cultural Identity: The sense of belonging to a particular culture, based on shared traditions and practices.
  • Hybrid Identity: A composite cultural identity resulting from the blending of different ethnic traditions.
